Amazing Present Ideas for the Happy Entrepreneur

Amazing Present Ideas for the Happy Entrepreneur

By Sam Sutherland

I’m pretty sure you’re feeling a little bit cray cray at the moment.

The end of the year is fast approaching, all your clients want everything finished off by the end of the year, you’re overloaded with work, gearing up for way too much present shopping and possibly starting to dread family Christmas (I personally LOVE family Christmas, but I know not everyone feels that way).

So, you may think from the title that this is about shopping for presents. Incorrect! This is all about the presence you can give to yourself. See what I did there?

Without checking in with yourself, it’s easy to get totally overwhelmed and stressed during the holidays, and surely one of the reasons we all start working for ourselves is the freedom and flexibility it affords us.

So without further adieu or bad jokes, here is my list of the present of presence to give to yourself this silly season, to make you the happiest entrepreneur on the block.

  1. Let a bit of stillness in.

I talk about this a lot, and if I’m honest, I still need to continually remind myself to practice what I preach. But I try, oh I try. And you can try too! Sit, breath, walk, breath, do yoga, breath, swim, breath. Just try to quiet your mind every day to give yourself the focus you need to get through this crazy end of year. There’s no right way (I even heard Tony Robbins say recently on a podcast that he can’t get into meditating, but he still does what he calls ‘priming’ and spends time in nature and in silence) so don’t feel like you have to do anything in particular. Just spend some time being quiet.

  1. Laugh your little head off.

Laughing is my favourite thing. You know They say laughter is the best medicine and I think They are totally right! It will help you relieve stress, remember why you’re doing what you’re doing, connect with whomever you’re laughing with and generally make you feel good. Here are a couple of links to start you off. A bit of Jimmy Fallon and some gorgeous kitten photos

  1. Get clear on your not-to-do list.

Client asks for a rush job that you can’t fit in without skipping sleep for the next three nights? Friend invites you to a party that you don’t really want to go to? Colleagues bring in chocolate cake? Every day of the holiday season? These are all things that you can say no to, and the no will make you feel better about yourself and your life. So work out what you’re NOT going to do this year, write them down, and remember ‘No is a complete sentence’ (thanks Arianna Huffington for another pearl of wisdom).

  1. Let your hair down!

We all learned in The Shining that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Don’t let yourself get to the stage that you’re hacking down doors with an axe. It’s called the Silly Season for a reason, so take advantage of all the fun stuff going on! Go to the lunches and parties and boat cruises, because they won’t be happening when everyone’s back in the thick of it in February. Life is for living, so make sure you’re not so busy meeting a deadline that you forget to have fun.

There you have it! My simple but effective list of gifts you can give yourself this December and January. The best survival guide I’ve read, so I hope it inspires you to giggle a little even if the going gets tough.

Happy holidays blooming Violets!
